Field Guide, Wildlife and Ranger courses
If you have ever spent time in a game reserve on an open
vehicle game drive, and been captivated by the knowledge and
experience of the rangers with their understanding of their
environment, then maybe your next visit to South Africa should
include taking part in game ranger program!
Types of Course available
For the adventurous who want to combine a very active holiday
with a learning experience, there are a variety of private
game reserves and recognized institutions which offer wildlife
and nature courses. Courses range from three to 28 days and
are set out for those with limited time but want to experience
and learn about 'the real African bush'.
These courses give novices an understanding of the fauna and
flora while providing practical exposure in a big game region
-all with experienced trainers. There are also rehabilitation
centres that offer short courses and these also include the
opportunity to learn about the handling and treatment of injured
animals.
Subjects covered on course
Your studies take place both in the class room as well
as out in the bush and covers subjects such as:
- Animal tracking
- Plant and tree identification
- Animal tracks
- Survival skills
- Basic 4 x 4 driving
Some can also include bush sleep outs.
What you need
Besides a passion for nature and an interest in wildlife,
those who wish to join a course need to be under the age of
45 and also need to be quite fit as these courses can be physically
challenging! It is also essential to take the necessary precautions
against Malaria and participants are required to consult their
medical practitioner or travel clinic before traveling to
any Malaria area.

- Neutral coloured clothing

- Insect repellant
- Sunscreen
- All necessary inoculations
- Binoculars
- Back pack
