Free State Gold Fields
The region's attractions centre on the mining of
gold and agriculture. Apart from its gold, this region is
blessed with a game reserve and two nature reserves
- St Helena Mine - Be sure not to miss out on a trip
to the world's deepest wine cellar at the St Helena Mine
- 857m below the earth's surface.
- Willem Pretorius Game Reserve - Situated in the
heart of the Free the reserve has a great variety of game
and bird species as well as a well-preserved ruin of a prehistoric
settlement, allegedly of the long-vanished Leghoya people.
- Underground mine tours - Visitors have the opportunity
traveling to the depths of the earths in a local gold mine
for an unforgettable experience. Visit mines in Welkom,
Virginia or Theunissen.
