Trans Gariep and Eastern Highlands Region

'The land of a thousand pictures' is an unspoilt, unpolluted and sparsely populated region with many game farms and outstanding nature reserves offering an abundant animal, plant and bird life.

  • The Gariep Dam - Situated on the Orange River this enormous inland sea is an excellent venue for water sport and recreation. The Nature Reserve surrounding the Dam is a sanctuary for a large population of springbok.

  • Zastron - Famous for its beautiful examples of Bushman paintings as well as the Eye of Zastron - a hole 9 meters in diameter, through a sandstone cliff in the Aasvoëlberg Mountain

  • Transgariep Museum -This museum depicts various themes in the Free State's history. Learn also about the local people, the Griqua's, and their traditional way of life.

Motheo is the Sesotho word for "foundation" and is derived from the geographic positioning at the heart of the economic and industrial development of the province.

  • Bloemfontein - Known as the "City of Roses" and the capital of the Free State.

  • Bloemfontein Botanical Gardens - The gardens features an orchid house said to be the most modern of its kind in the southern hemisphere and a fragrance garden designed for the visually impaired. The park is also home to over 100 bird species.
