The Thabo Mofutsanyana Region

This region comprises of the most beautiful sandstone landscapes creating colorful layers of orange, yellow and gold. There is an extensive system of parks and reserves which is home to a variety of animals, hiking trails, various cultural, ethnic, monumental and historical sites.

  • The Golden Gate National Park - This Park derives its name from the brilliant shades of gold cast by the sun on the park's sandstone cliffs, especially the impressive Brandwag rock.

  • The Basotho Cultural Village - Situated at Qwa Qwa Park, the village is a collection of beehive reed-and-stick structures, and mud huts decorated with combed and painted patterns. It was designed by the Sotho people who work and perform here.

  • Clarens - This town has a Swiss-like appearance and concentration of artists. Visitors can view one of the many art galleries or the tiny Cinderella Castle built entirely out of bottles. There area also several Bushman rock paintings in the region.

  • The petrified tree - a true wonder of nature, 30 metres long and estimated to be 250 million years old that can be viewed at the Town hall.

  • The Salpeterkrans sandstone overhang - This is the largest sandstone overhang in the Southern Hemisphere and a bizarre example of wind erosion. It is still used for ancestral worship by local tribes.

  • Bushman rock art - Four unique rock art comet sites clustered around the town of Fouriesburg. This site cluster is unique in southern Africa.

Northern Free State

Just an hour from Johannesburg, the region offers game farms and camping sites for the adventure junkies. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking routes in the Vredefort Dome and see untouched San paintings and ruins of people who lived in the area during the Iron Age.

  • The Vredefort Dome, The third largest and oldest meteorite site in the world. The area offers many activities for visitors, including river rafting, river tubing, abseiling, horse riding and mountain biking. It is also home to a number of Anglo Boer War sites.

  • Riemland Museum - Housed in an old Jewish Synagogue in Heilbron the museum depicts the heritage and the agricultural activities of the region.
