Tshwane

Tshwane (or Pretoria), approximately 50 km north of Johannesburg, is renowned for its jacaranda trees in spring and is a melting pot of traditions, culture, language and architecture with some of SA finest museums, historic houses and monuments.

  • Melrose House - Built in1886 this elegant house (now a museum) is a superb example of the transition of Victorian to Edwardian architectural styles and interiors. The Peace Treaty of Vereeniging which ended the Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1902) was signed here on 31 May 1902.

  • Union Buildings - Designed by the architect Sir Herbert Baker and set in terraced gardens modeled on the famous Villa d'Este at Tivoli near Rome, Italy, with magnificent panoramic views overlooking the city. The Union Buildings still house the offices of the South African State President.

  • Voortrekker Monument - Built to commemorate the Great Trek and the Voortrekkers, (Pioneers), who left the Cape Colony in their thousands between 1835 and 1854. This enormous grey building can be seen from all directions as you near Pretoria.

  • Cradle of Humankind - A World Heritage Site consisting of a variety of important palaeo-anthropological sites. Meet the famous "Mrs Ples" and the amazing "Little Foot".

  • Constitutional Hill - This living museum documents South Africa's turbulent and political history.

  • Cullinan - A former diamond mining town that is home to the Cullinan Diamond Mine where the world's biggest diamond was discovered.

  • Sterkfontein Caves -This cave has become famous for its archaeological treasures, including Mrs Ples, the 2-million year old female skull discovered in 1947.

  • Magaliesburg - Home to the Magaliesburg Meander, where arts and crafts are available, working farms, horse and mountain bike trails.

  • Lesedi Cultural Village - a multicultural village set in the heart of the bushveld less than an hour's drive north of Johannesburg.
