The Gauteng Climate
Said to offer one of the world's best climates, the region has warm summer days, relatively wind-free and crisp clear winter days. It is a summer rainfall area with warm to hot days and clear blue skies with thunderstorms occur in the late afternoon, and often including hail. Winters are mild - clear and dry with early morning frost.

Some Gauteng History
In 1886 gold was discovered and the Transvaal (as it was known then) was inundated by diggers and within 12 months it was the second largest town in the region. In 1900 Johannesburg fell to the British in the Anglo Boer war. Around this time black townships such as Sophia town and Alexandra were established. Much of the history of the province was defined by apartheid and forced removals and during the 1940s many of the squatter camps that had been set up were destroyed by the authorities. The black people were moved to new suburbs known as the South-Western townships (abbreviated to Soweto). The development of apartheid during the 1960s did nothing to slow the expansion of the city or the arrival of black squatters. Large-scale violence broke out in 1976. Regulations were finally abandoned in 1990. The province was formed from part of the old Transvaal province, including the black townships which were integrated into the municipal system after South Africa's first all-race elections on 27 April 1994. It was originally named Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging (or PWV) and was renamed Gauteng in December 1994.
