Lesotho Tours Sight-seeing
Lesotho tours offer beautiful and spectacular sight-seeing opportunities, including:
Sani Pass
This spectacular mountain road is the gateway to the scenic
'Roof of Africa' route that links the dramatic scenery of
the Drakensberg with the mountains of northern Lesotho and
has become a highlight for tourists visiting the Southern
Drakensberg. 4x4 vehicles are necessary for this road, especially
if the weather is bad, as it is common in Lesotho to experience
all four seasons in one day. This steep zigzagging pass said
to be the highest road in Africa. Visitors can stop and have
lunch at the top of the Sani pass at the highest pub in Southern
Africa. Today the Sani Pass is a protected Wilderness area
populated by eland, unique flora and bird life.
Malealea
Malealea is one of the gems of Lesotho with its spectacular
region of mountains, valleys and ancient San paintings. Situated
in a remote part of Western Lesotho, it consists of breathtaking
beauty. Hiking and pony-trekking are the two best ways to
see the scenery, experience traditional Basotho life and the
friendliness of the local people. Visitors can trek for a
single hour or for as long as 4 days into the Maluti Mountains,
visiting remote and friendly villages and stay in authentic
Lesotho huts.
Semonkong
Situated in the heart of Lesotho and nestling on the banks
of the Maletsunyane River. Meaning 'the place of smoke', it
refers to the impressive 200m Maletsunyane falls which thunder
down into a pool and create a smoky mist. In winter the area
is also often covered with thick mist.
Sehlabathebe National Park
The oldest nature reserve in Lesotho, Sehlabathebe is remote
and rugged and almost inaccessible - therefore 4 x 4 vehicles
are essential. It is a peaceful and incredibly beautiful reserve
and contains some antelope and rare birds. Stunning hikes
and pony treks are available in this region. It is a good
idea to take a guide along on excursions, and there is always
someone willing to go along for a minimal fee.
Katse Dam
Situated in the Lesotho Highlands, the Katse Dam was the largest
single dam in the world until the Three Gorges Dam in China
was constructed. This engineering masterpiece has dammed the
Malibamatso and Bokong rivers, and offers magnificent views.
The dam wall is almost a kilometer long and 185 metres high.
Guided tours into the wall of the dam are offered twice daily.
