Limpopo Province Travel Information
Known as the Great North, this province is rich in wildlife, spectacular scenery and a wealth of historical and cultural treasures, making Limpopo Province tours rather popular. The province is also the home of myths and legends, most famously that of the fabled Rain Queen, who, as the legend proclaims, has the mystical power to make rain.
The Limpopo Province can be divided into 5 regions:
The Limpopo Climate
Limpopo is renowned for its hot yet pleasant summers and dry
winters and is characterised by almost year-round sunshine.
Some Limpopo History
Pre-European history consisted of tribal conflicts between
the local Tswana people and the migrating Ndebele people who
had fled Zululand to escape from Shaka. Between 1899 and 1902,
no less than 20 major battles took place across the old Western
Transvaal - now the Eastern half of the North West Province.
After the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910,
most of the area formed part of the "old Transvaal" and in
1961 the Republic of South Africa was founded. The implementation
of the Homeland Policy lead to the incorporation of a large
part of the North West into a Bantustan (tribal homeland)
called Bophuthatswana.
The North West Province was created by the merger of Bophuthatswana
and the western part of Transvaal in 1994 under the new dispensation
of the new Republic of South Africa.
