The Central Region
The central region of Namibia is the hub of the country,
with Windhoek, the vibrant capital city at its heart, to stately
buildings which range from the home of Namibia's parliament,
to the newly founded Hero's Acre. This region also includes the Namib Desert,
Sossusvlei, Fish River Canyon and Luderitz.
Etosha National Park Paradise
The Etosha National Park is one of Africa's most important
wildlife sanctuaries in Africa and is a wonderful wildlife-viewing
venue encompassing a vast salt pan 80 miles long. Etosha is famed for its diversity of wildlife and when the Pan is filled during the rainy seasons, it can be seen from space! Meaning'place of dry water' or 'huge white area' in Ovambo
appropriately describes the vast salt pan which
is cracked for much of the year. Believed to have originated over
12 million years ago as a shallow lake, Etosha is said to have the
tallest Elephants in Africa, and is acknowledgedas being one of
the last wild safe haven’s for the endangered Black Rhino.
Travellers will experience different game viewing depending on the time of year they travel. In October and November, large herds of blue wildebeest, zebra, springbok and oryx migrate from the Namutoni area to Okaukuejo and remain in the park until May. Bird lovers will be happy to know that 340 species of birds have been recorded in the park.
Windhoek
Windhoek is the capital city of Namibia, and features an unusual
blend of European colonial and modern African architecture and is a bustling,
cosmopolitan city with good hotels, sophisticated shops and friendly bistros.
Spitzkoppe
A place of great mystery, this enormous granite dome rises
above the desert plains between Windhoek and Swakopmund. It
is also referred to as Namibia's Matterhorn; the Spitzkoppe
is one of the great mountaineering opportunities in Africa.
Lake Otjikoto
Situated 24km North West of the town of Tsumeb and is 76m
deep. Qualified divers can explore an underwater museum of
armament and weaponry from World War 1.
Okahandja
The town of Okahandja is situated north of Windhoek and is
well known for wood carving markets and the Mahereo festival
which occurs every August. Okahandja is an important historical
town for the Herero people of Namibia.
Rehoboth
Rehoboth is around 90km south of Windhoek and is home to the Baster
People. Attractions of the town include the Reho-Spa, Rehoboth Museum,
Acacia Forest and the recreation resort at the Oanob Dam.
Sand dunes at Sossusvlei Experience the world’s highest sand dunes when you visit Sossusvlei. Excellent for hiking, Sossusvlei is situated in the vast Namib-Naukluft Park. The Park is home to the unique Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra found only in Namibia and Southern Angola. The canyon is the second largest in the world after the Grand Canyon and the observation point at Hobas provides a breathtaking view. To further enrich the history and culture associated with the Fish River Canyon, archaeological evidence suggests that the Bushmen lived there 50 000 years ago. Sophisticated Swakopmund Swakopmund, which is a beach resort, is Namibia's foremost holiday destination and has a diverse mixture of modern and classic architecture. Annual Events
Independence Day
Held each year on 21 March and is probably the most important day on
most Namibian's calendar. Independence festivities occur in every village,
town and city and will often include speeches by members of parliament,
singing and dancing.
Maherero Day
This event occurs in Okahandja on the weekend closest to the 26th of August.
Thousands of Herero people gather in traditional dress for a memorial service
to their chiefs. It is a spectacular occasion and worth visiting during the festival.
Tours are often arranged from Windhoek.
German style beer festivals
The most notable of these beer festivals is the Octoberfest which occurs in late October.
