The Coastal Region

The coastal region stretches along the Namibian coast in the form of the Namib Desert and is divided into the Skeleton Coast(in the north) and the Diamond Coast (in the south), stretching along the entire coastline and also includes Swakopmund and Lüderitz. There are a number of features of this coastal desert that make it quite unlike any spot on earh.

Kolmanskoppe
Situated near Lüderitz, the town as established following the discovery of diamonds. Within 40 years Kolmanskoppe lived, flourished and died.
The ghost town's crumbling are now being destroyed by the wind and gradually covered by sand dunes.

The Namib Desert
One of the oldest deserts in the world stretches from the Orange River in the south to just north of the Kunene River. A spectacularly barren, brilliant red sand landscapeIts trademark rust red dunes were washed ashore over millennia by the icy Benguela. Current from deposits washed down the Orange River. The desert features some truly bizarre life forms (notably the Welwitschia Mirabilis and the desert elephant), as well as the tallest dunes in the world at Sossusvlei. Three major towns are situated on the coast where the desert meets the sea: Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Lüderitz. Much of the Namib Desert is situated within the Namib-Naukluft Park.

Lüderitz
This small town has one of the best harbours on what must be the least hospitable coast in Africa and began life as a trading post, fishing and guano-harvesting town. Its appeal as a town lies in the fact that little has changed since the early 20th century

Skeleton Coast Park One of the least accessible regions of Namibia, the park stretches from the Kunene River in the north to the Ugab River in the south and includes sand dunes, canyons and mountain ranges.

Sophisticated Swakopmund
A premier holiday resort in Namibia where the cool Namibian coast offers relief from the intense heat of the interior, with a diverse mixture of modern and classic architecture. Add to your Namibia adventure travel experience by visiting the National Marine Aquarium to enjoy the sand dunes that have been set aside for fun and adventure sports, and also visiting the camel farm nearby. To get the best of your African safari, get advice from tour operators about the various vacation packages or self-drive tours available. Perhaps you can combine your Namibia safari with a trip to one of her neighbouring states.

Walvis Bay
Walvis Bay is the main harbour town in Namibia and has its prolific bird life and variety of recreational possibilities, a desert golf course, a choice of restaurants and adventure activities such as sea kayaking and dolphin cruises.
