MS Albatros Cruise Ship
February was a busy month for the MICE department. All hands were on deck for the MS Albatros cruise ship operation which took place between 6 and 15 February.

Ports of call included Richards Bay, Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth, Mossel Bay and Cape Town. There was an unprecedented demand for shore excursions, with most guests requesting a safari option.

Much work was required with last minute changes to the itinerary. A week before arrival it was decided that the cruise ship would skip Madagascar, thus arriving a day earlier and adding an additional port in South Africa, namely East London. All went extremely well though, and guests left South Africa with broad smiles.

Meetings Africa a great success
Robin Mcleod represented Kuoni Destination Management at Meetings Africa, South Africa’s top business tourism trade exhibition, where we shared a stand with 7 other SITE members. In spite of a tough economic environment South African Tourism has reported strong support for business tourism from both exhibitors and visitors.

Meetings Africa experienced 15 percent more exhibitors this year with a total of 218 businesses offering their wares to the global travel trade. Of those exhibitors, 50 were at Meetings Africa for the first time.

The exhibition was attended by 1 921 visitors, including local and international buyers and media representatives. Says Nomasonto Ndlovu, Global Manager: Business Tourism at South African Tourism: “Although we have experienced a slight decrease in visitor numbers to Meetings Africa compared to last year, feedback indicates that the event attracted more quality local and international buyers and overall exhibitors conducted good business with these buyers.”

Soccer World Cup 2010
World Cup tickets very much in demand
Within 48 hours of the opening of ticket sales on Friday 20 February, more than 300 000 online ticket applications for the 2010 Fifa World Cup were received. This figure excludes thousands of the applications processed through nationwide branches of First National Bank (FNB), which is a World Cup sponsor.

"The fervour is already palpable within South Africa and all around the world... everyone wants to take part in this extraordinary event," said LOC CE Danny Jordaan.

The tickets are to be sold in phases. In the first phase of ticket sales, fans have until midnight on March 31, 2009 to make ticket applications on the www.FIFA.com website. A random draw will take place on April 15 to determine who gets tickets for oversubscribed matches.
