Sophisticated transformation for Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge
Reception Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge

Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge, ideally situated in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, has been transformed from a practical business hotel to a stylish, sophisticated and elegant property with an entirely new look throughout the rooms, suites and public areas. The hotel has had very little done to it from the time it opened its doors in 1991. Now, 20 years later, it’s like walking into an entirely new property.

The rooms, ranging from studios to deluxe units, now include fittings and equipment that have been specifically designed to maximize the use of the existing space while the crisp white percale linen and white high-gloss built-in units provide a fresh contrast. The introduction of solid oak has brought an element of Africa and nature, creating a modern yet comfortable and practical home away from home.

Looking for a unique active travel experience?

Yearning to get off the beaten track? Look no further! Bike & Saddle, a leading eco-active travel company, offers a range of guided biking trips around Southern Africa. Their trademark Cape Town Culture & Heritage Cycle, a sunset excursion that has been voted one of the city’s top 10 attractions, is something not to be missed.

The tour starts at the picturesque Yacht Marina at the V&A Waterfront where you are given a safety briefing and orientation while getting accustomed to the top quality bicycles. Making use of the new cycle lanes and pedestrian pathways, the tour continues through the historic waterfront into the newly configured Green Point Urban Park, past the impressive Cape Town Stadium before heading into the delightful De Waterkant Village and onto the historic Company Gardens, home to Parliament, the National Gallery and much more.

After a meander down Long Street, the party heart of the city, there is a short pedal up into the Bo-Kaap to ride along cobbled streets and experience the call to prayer from ancient mosques and the delicious aroma of traditional Cape malay cooking. The tour heads back towards the Waterfront for a well-deserved treat of canapés and sparkling wine at the Cape Grace’s Bascule Bar, the perfect finale to a wonderful adventure! Experiencing the city from a saddle allows one to take in the sights from a new perspective, while showcasing the city's rich culture and heritage - great fun!

Creative CR Day - Aware and Fair
Farmers Market - MICE division
'Hard working bees' and their deorative flowers from recycled plastic - Reservations division

Interesting presentations, fun-filled projects and local events were held in each of the Kuoni business units around the world in order to raise awareness on Fair Trade & Travel.

Kuoni is dedicated to engage employees so that they can better understand the concept of fair travel in their working lives. Building on the success of the Corporate Responsibility Days in 2009 and 2010, this year's theme of Aware and Fair was no exception. Staff at Private Safaris pulled out all the stops.

As avid supporters of fair trade travel with 3 certified tours already, staff completely embraced the theme. Each division got together and produced some magnificent awareness projects - and costumes!

There was a fresh produce farmer's market with fresh eggs, bread, vegetable along with the ''farmers'; recycled flowers using plastics bottles and containers, child labour awareness, the support of local industries and therefore local employment and even a Fair Trade Tourism tour produced by one division and included a cycle tour, wine route, township tour and marine encounter station! In addition, Fair Trade companies presented their products to staff in an informal workshop, creating a vital awareness of products and industries supportive of Corporate Responsibility.
