Some Western Cape History
Inhabited approximately 350 years ago by the Khoi, San and other African -speaking groups about 350 years ago. In 1488 Bartholomew Diaz rounded the Cape of Good Hope in search of a halfway stop for trade routes to the East and named it the ‘Cape of storms’. In 1503 Jan van Riebeeck established a settlement for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in order to re-supply their ships en route to East Asia and by 1652 it had developed into a town. Today Table Mountain and Cape Town remain two of the world's most famous landmarks.
